Itinerary

A living example of nature’s true power, Iceland boasts stunning landscapes and natural wonders in a land of extreme geological contrasts. Along with rich legend and lore — plunging waterfalls, massive glaciers, black sand beaches, and hot springs all make this land of fire and ice an unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Reykjavik

Halló og velkomin til ÍslandsIn other words, welcome to Iceland! Reykjavik is the Northernmost capital of the world and sees about four hours of sunlight in the winter and more than 22 hours in the summertime.  After an included transfer to your hotel, the city is yours to explore. Your Local Leader and fellow travelers await you tonight for dinner in one of the hottest cities in the world.(d)

Day 2: Reykjavik > Golden Circle – Hvolsvollur area

Explore the world-famous Golden Circle today. The idyllic scenery will take your breath away. Thingvellir National Park is home to the oldest active parliament in the world dating back in 930 A.D. and home to the meeting place of two tectonic plates. En route to the famed Geysir geothermal area we’ll stop at a Geothermal Bakery to meet some locals who bake bread and other treats using the underground heat. We’ll view both the stunning Strokkur geyser and Old Geysir. And, our last stop of the day is one of the most photographed locations in all of Iceland, the Golden Waterfall, Gullfoss. Our home this evening is an eco-farmhouse in the town of Hveragerdi. (b)

Day 3: Westman Islands – Hvolsvollur region

Sitting on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Westman Islands are home to an incomparable landscape of volcanoes, lava, and windswept cliffs, we’ll journey there by ferry. Take in the history and natural wonder of the islands and meet the folks who call the region home. To complete our experience in this unique part of Iceland, visit the Eldheimar museum before returning to the mainland. We’ll enjoy dinner at our farmhouse accommodation tonight. (b, d)

Day 4: Hvolsvollur region > Vatnajokull region

Today we visit the breathtaking Skogafoss waterfall. You may choose to journey up a nearby staircase to feel the sheer power of the waterfall and take in a stunning viewpoint. Take in the unique landscape of Reynisfjara before we travel to Skaftafell National Park. Our scenery changes once again as we cruise between jagged icebergs in the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Our home tonight is located at the edge of Vatnajokull glacier. (b)

Day 5: Þakgil Canyon > Vik

Discover one of Iceland’s best kept secrets: Þakgil, a small enclosed canyon, sheltered on all sides by steep moss-covered vertical mountains. Together with our Local Leader, we’ll embark on a hike to discover this ruggedly beautiful part of Iceland. The remainder of the day is yours, unscripted. (b)

Day 6: Vik > Reykjavik

Today, you may choose to rise early and enjoy a low impact hike to an abandoned plane wreck where in 1973 a United States Navy plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur.

We’ll then return to Reykjavik, stopping along the way at a sheep farm and wool tannery. At the mill & yarn store- we’ll meet the locals who spin their own naturally colored yarn. We’ll also visit a horse farm where you can learn more about Icelandic horse breeding and meet the friendly animals.  Once back in Reykjavik, enjoy a final night of your Icelandic adventure. (b)

Special information

For some departures the visit to the plane wreck might be organized in the twilight of Day 5. This will largely depend on the time of year and weather. Your Tour Leader will be able to pick the best time.
