Itinerary

Set on the Italian Riviera in Northwestern Italy — and mostly inaccessible by automobiles — this quaint hillside region is a network of five fishing villages connected by trains, boats and pathways. Known for its terraced mountainsides and tasty seafood, Cinque Terre is a foodie’s paradise — where homemade pesto and locally made wines are part of the charm.

Day 1: Lucca

Our adventure begins in historic Lucca, a city encircled by Renaissance walls. Arrive anytime today and make your way to your hotel. This evening, we meet our Local Leader and discuss the days ahead. Our welcome dinner is at a favorite local spot. (d)

Day 2: Lucca

The scenic Serchio River and picturesque Tuscan countryside are the backdrop for our cycling tour today. We’ll stop at a local market to pick up fresh ingredients for our picnic lunch. The remainder of the day will be unscripted to seek personal discoveries of this charming Tuscan town. (b, l)

Day 3: Lucca > Levanto

We venture today to Levanto, centrally located on the Ligurian coast. With an in interesting old center, delightful painted villas, and delicious restaurants, it’s the perfect base to explore the Cinque Terre. We’ll get familiar with the town on bikes, and ride on the cycling path along the old coastal railway line to Framura. Perhaps you will decide to enjoy an aperitivo in a great spot overlooking the sea before returning to Levanto. (b, d)

Day 4: Levanto > Monterosso > Levanto

Today we’ll walk along the coast from Levanto to Monterosso — the first of the five villages of the Cinque Terre. Our path travels through the old town center of Levanto, moving us past the stunning cathedral and up to its castle. We continue up to Punta Mesco, the most notable promontory in the region. Along the way, we’ll enjoy marvelous views of the rugged coastline as we dip down into Monterosso — a colorful village with blue, red and yellow houses that cluster along the beachfront. Jumping on the local train, we travel back to Levanto, where the flavors of the region come alive during a pesto class this evening. (b)

Day 5: Levanto > Cinque Terre > Levanto

We return to the footpaths of Cinque Terre — a region of Italy famed for its pastel villages dotting the mountains — which plunge into the sea. The trails that run between villages were once the only way to travel in the region. We’ll wander through olive groves and vineyards, where idyllic, breathtaking vistas are around every corner. If you're feeling energetic, walk the entire path and immerse yourself in the villages and countryside. Or, walk at your own pace just a few sections at a time — taking the train between the villages as we head back to our home base in Levanto. (b)

Day 6: Levanto > Santa Margherita Ligure

Traveling by local train to Santa Margherita Ligure, we’ll see the best of the Portofino Peninsula. A short walking tour through the historical center of Santa Margherita Ligure leads us to the hills to enjoy beautiful views across the bay. In Portofino — one of the most typical Ligurian seaside villages — we gain a different perspective while kayaking along the stunning coastline. Later, you might choose to enjoy a relaxed aperitivo on the beach, go for a swim or explore the village before returning to Santa Margherita.(b)

Day 7: Santa Margherita Ligure

Your day is unscripted today, so you can fully enjoy Santa Margherita your way. Stroll through its beautiful town center or relax on the beach. If you wish to further your adventure, take the train to the stunning city of Camogli, or perhaps walk across the beautiful hills of the Portofino Peninsula. Create the perfect ending to your Cinque Terre adventure with a vast array of options. (b)

Day 8: Santa Margherita Ligure

Our adventure through the five villages ends today. (b)
